Columbus State University's main campus
has grown from its five original buildings to become a thriving
campus where classes
are held late into the evening in buildings often named for
individuals who have helped the college grow.
But the university extends well beyond 150 acres in the middle of
Columbus. CSU has its own house in Oxford, England for students
and faculty to study abroad; an expanding campus, called CSU River
Park, along the river
in historic downtown Columbus for the fine and performing arts; and outreach
centers throughout the city where the excellence of the university
is brought closer to the community.
Most classes are still taught on main campus, where improvements
are constantly being made. One of the campus' jewels is the 96,000-square-foot
Center for Commerce and Technology, which opened in 2003 at the front
of campus as the new home for the D. Abbott Turner College of
Business, TSYS Department of Computer Science and the university's Computer Information
& Networking Services department.
The building features wiring for 1,500 computers; lounge areas on
all floors for students to socialize; and auditoriums outfitted
with the latest technology including-rear-screen projectors;
audio-visual control panels for professors and power, voice, and
data ports at each seat for students.
The Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center also is an impressive recent
addition to campus. The Lumpkin Center is home to CSU's men's and
women's basketball teams, the Department of Physical Education and
Leisure Management, CSU's commencements and various classes. The
5,000-seat arena inside also allows the university to host a wide
variety of regional and local events.
In June 2005, CSU opened the doors to the Cunningham Center, a multi-use,
technologically sophisticated facility with a focus on economic development
and leadership development. The 67,500-square-foot building houses a conference
center featuring 10 seminar rooms and a 5,400-square foot banquet hall; the
CSU Institute for Leadership Development; the Cunningham Sales Institute;
The Information Technology Innovation Center, a technology incubator; and
the Center for Quality Teaching and Learning, which will coordinate and
customize professional learning opportunities for CSU faculty and for P-12
educators and technology specialists in West Central Georgia.
With these new buildings, a newly renovated student center,
classrooms, laboratories, offices, auditoriums, a state-of-the art
fitness center, cafeterias and other gathering spots, students
have a wide variety of choices for study and comfort.
Computer labs across campus provide student access to e-mail, word
processing and online research, as well as instructional
technology throughout the curriculum. Student housing also
supports e-mail and Internet access. The Simon Schwob Memorial
Library, open more than 90 hours a week, provides online access to
more than 100 databases and electronic full-text of more than 500
journals. Students also have access to the Internet and CD-ROM
informational products in both Apple and PC platforms.
Students also can make use of the leisure activities afforded by a
recently renovated student center, student life pavilion, athletic and intramural
fields and tennis courts.
Student housing is provided by new apartment-style housing
adjacent to campus, as well as sophisticated apartments in
downtown Columbus on CSU's River Park campus, next door to the
RiverCenter for the
Performing Arts, which houses CSU's
Schwob School of Music.
CSU is about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta, just off I-185. The main
campus is minutes away from a commuter airport and the mall, and
15 minutes from historic Uptown Columbus. The city offers museums;
an outstanding symphony; ice hockey; professional basketball
(NBDL); concerts and other special events in the Columbus Civic
Center; and hiking and biking along the Chattahoochee River and in
48 city parks. Historic attractions, Georgia's largest state park,
mountains, the Gulf and Atlantic seacoasts are all within
convenient travel time from Columbus.
