1998-1999 Catalog
Department of Language
and Literature
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English language and
literature provides excellent preparation for many careers as well as pre-professional
training leading to graduate study, law school, or teaching careers. The Bachelor of
Arts (BA) in English with emphasis in professional writing provides preparation for
careers in areas such as technical writing, business communication, editing, public
relations, or journalism.
As long as society values communication, English majors will find a market for their
talents. Their special skills in analyzing and organizing verbal materials make them
excellent candidates for the professions. Law schools, seminaries, and medical schools
acknowledge the value of the undergraduate English program to their fields. English majors
also may seek careers as technical writers, consultants, managers, marketing specialists,
teachers, speech writers, report writers, editors of house publications, television or
radio news writers, or newspaper reporters.
Expected Outcomes
Graduates will demonstrate:
- The ability to express ideas in writing
